The issue

Every payday, around 12% of your wages goes into superannuation before you ever see it. You did not choose it, and you cannot opt out. People First would make superannuation voluntary — so you can take it as wages and decide for yourself.

The promise, and what happened

Compulsory superannuation arrived in 1992 with a simple promise: put your money away now, and you will not need the pension later.

Thirty-four years on, most Australians over 65 still rely on the age pension. We have handed over trillions of dollars, built one of the largest pools of managed money on earth, and the outcome the system was sold on has barely shifted.

It is a lot of money to be told you can't touch

12% of every pay packet is serious money to a young family paying rent, a tradie running a ute, or anyone trying to put together a deposit. On a $70,000 salary it is around $8,400 a year you never see.

Superannuation is the right choice for plenty of people. But it should be a choice.

What People First would do

Make superannuation contributions voluntary.

Workers who want to keep contributing, keep contributing — nothing changes for them. Workers who would rather take that money as wages, can. No fund is abolished. No existing balance is touched. Nobody's savings are taken away.

The only thing that changes is who decides.

Every signature is evidence that Australians want this choice returned to them.
